Today, after waiting for 2 hours at the Social Security office, I learned that:
.) I am re-entitled to SSDI (disability payments from the Federal government because I am crazy)
.) This was officially awarded to me on May 11, 2009. (Today--July 9, 2009--is the first day I became aware of it)
.) Because I applied for SSDI on Feb. 2, 2009, I am entitled to retroactive payments going back to February and accruing through June.
.) But...
.) While I wasn't looking, the Fed. accidentally over-paid me either $9,600 or $28,000 (one of the two, but not both--they are pretty sure)
.) So, the Fed. is entitled to garnish any future disability payments until the balance that I owe them is paid.
.) The Fed. has decided that of the $991/mo I am due based on the cost of living in San Francisco, California, they will automatically deduct $991/mo until the balance (either $9,600 or $28,000--but not both) is paid in full.
.) On the positive side, I will be allotted an additional $54 in SSI (Supplemental Security Insurance from the State) to apply towards such menial items as rent, food, utilities, etc.
.) I asked to speak to a supervisor (just to be on the safe side) but after 3 more hours of waiting, a fire alarm was pulled (I'm not making this up) and the building had to be evacuated!
.) I am re-entitled to SSDI (disability payments from the Federal government because I am crazy)...
